A South African court has ordered the youngest son of former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe to pay a substantial fine and be deported after pleading guilty to immigration offences and pointing a toy gun at a man.
Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe and another man were arrested in February following an incident at a Johannesburg mansion where a worker was shot and injured. The court heard the firearm used in the shooting has not yet been recovered, and both men have remained in custody since their arrest.
Chatunga Mugabe admitted to pointing a toy gun in a separate incident and to violating South Africa’s immigration laws as part of a plea agreement. He was fined 400,000 rand for the toy gun offence and a further 200,000 rand for the immigration breach.
His co-accused, Tobias Matonhodze, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and other charges, and was sentenced to three years in prison, after which he will be deported. The injured worker received a compensation settlement totalling 400,000 rand.
