A driver whose car ploughed into a crowd of pedestrians – killing at least nine as they waited at a busy junction in South Korea – is facing allegations of accidental homicide.

Six people – including the motorist – were also injured after the deadly crash in Seoul city centre on Monday night.

Reports suggested he was driving in the wrong direction and collided with two other cars.

After being detained by investigators, the driver claimed his car had accelerated abruptly and unintentionally.

The vehicle is now set to be examined by forensics, with police scrutinising security footage from the scene.

Tests performed on Tuesday showed the motorist was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
