The Suhum Constituency branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed deep regret over the recent declaration by their sitting Member of Parliament, Hon. Kwadjo Asante, popularly known as Oboafo, to contest the upcoming 2024 Parliamentary Elections as an independent candidate.

This move by Hon. Asante has come as a significant surprise to many within the party, particularly given the efforts made by NPP leadership at all levels—national, regional, and constituency—to address grievances stemming from the January 27th, 2024 Constituency Delegates’ Congress.

It was during this congress that Mr. Frank Asiedu-Bekoe was chosen as the party’s Parliamentary Candidate for Suhum in the 2024 elections.

In an official statement, the Suhum NPP acknowledged the challenges inherent in managing a political party as large as theirs, with a membership base of over a million people.

“Not all of us would be satisfied with decisions of the Party from time to time,” the statement read, reflecting the party’s understanding of the diverse opinions within its ranks.

However, the statement emphasized the need for unity and focus, urging all members to rally behind the party’s Presidential Candidate, H.E. Dr. Mahmoud Bawumia, and their chosen Parliamentary Candidate, Mr. Asiedu-Bekoe.

The statement also called on party members to avoid actions or comments that could inflame tensions during this delicate period. “Insults do not earn votes,” the party cautioned, stressing the importance of maintaining decorum and unity as they approach the elections.

Furthermore, the NPP leadership in Suhum reminded its members of the party’s constitutional provisions regarding independent candidacies.

According to Article 3(9)(1) of the NPP Constitution, any member who chooses to run as an independent candidate after the party has selected its official candidate automatically forfeits their membership.

The party made it clear that it will not shield any member who violates these rules by supporting or campaigning for an independent candidate or another political party when the NPP has its own nominee.

In conclusion, the Suhum NPP called on all its members to stay committed to the party’s core principles and to work tirelessly to ensure victory in the upcoming elections.

The statement closed with a rallying cry: “Let’s continue to remain with the NPP and its belief—Development in Freedom!”
