The Pope has had an “isolated” breathing crisis as he is treated in hospital for double pneumonia, Vatican sources say.
The crisis led to an episode of vomiting, forcing the 88-year-old to use an oxygen mask on his nose and mouth for the first time and he underwent “non-invasive mechanical ventilation”.
The sources said the Holy Father suffered a bronchial spasm which, caused him to breath in vomit, causing “a sudden worsening of his respiratory condition.
“The Holy Father was promptly aspirated and started on non-invasive mechanical ventilation, with a good response on gas exchange.
“The Holy Father always remained vigilant and oriented, collaborating in the therapeutic manoeuvres.
“The prognosis therefore remains reserved. In the morning he received the Eucharist.”
The sources admitted it had been “a hard day” and said Francis “looks depressed”.
The crisis, which started around 2pm local time, was resolved in the afternoon.
Pope Francis is now using a different type of ventilation which is “on nose and mouth,” the first time he has done so, the sources added.
Doctors will need between 24 and 48 hours to understand if he has worsened because of the crisis, but they reported the Pope responded well, was conscious throughout and was “in good spirits”.
