American-Ghanaian comedian Michael Blackson has publicly criticised the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) following the death of his mother, who was reportedly 83. Blackson said she spent about a month receiving treatment at the Accra facility before she died.
In a series of posts on X on 4 August, Blackson accused the hospital of prioritising money over patient care. He wrote that, in his opinion, UGMC is “the worst hospital in Ghana” and claimed its staff “have no clue what they are doing”. He also alleged that the facility repeatedly misdiagnosed his mother while recommending “the most expensive treatments”, adding that he spent about GH¢250,000 during her final month in hospital.
Blackson further claimed that hospital staff contacted him whenever payments were due but that doctors did not provide regular updates on his mother’s condition. After her death, he said he was told she had contracted an infection and that an outstanding bill needed to be settled before the cause of death would be disclosed. In another post, he alleged that an employee asked him for a tip when he went to identify her body.

The comedian said he had considered legal action over what he described as missed diagnoses, although he suggested that court proceedings in Ghana would take too long.
