Nigerian singer Spyro recently shared how growing up as the child of a pastor has shaped his life and career during an interview with Chude Jideonwo on the Just Chude podcast.

Spyro recounted the strict regimen of Bible study and morning devotions, which often disrupted his sleep. “The worst part was morning devotion. It always seemed to happen when I was in the deepest part of my sleep. It made me think, ‘This God must be out to ruin my life!’”

He admitted that his strict upbringing felt like a prison, and when he finally got into university, he saw it as a golden opportunity to escape. “It was a wild experience. When I got to uni, I felt like I had finally gained my freedom. I didn’t go back home for about four years. I was so grateful for that chance to get away.”

Despite the challenges, Spyro acknowledged the positive aspects of his upbringing. He noted that the lessons and fear of God instilled by his parents have stayed with him. “Even though I didn’t like the way they did things, the fear of God has remained with me. Throughout university, I stayed true to my values, not for my parents but because of that inner conviction. I don’t smoke, drink, or chase women. It’s all due to that fear of God that my parents instilled in me.
