Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has made history as Ghana’s first female Vice President, a groundbreaking achievement that marks a new chapter in the nation’s political landscape. The official swearing-in ceremony took place at the Black Star Square in Accra, attended by a wide array of dignitaries, diplomats, and citizens who witnessed this momentous occasion.

Born on November 22, 1951, in Cape Coast, Central Region, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s journey to the highest office has been one of breaking barriers. She earned her Bachelor’s degree and Diploma in Education at the University of Cape Coast before furthering her studies at York University in Canada, where she obtained a Master’s and Ph.D. in English Literature. Her academic excellence and leadership in education paved the way for her remarkable career.

In 2008, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang made history as the first woman to serve as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, where her leadership was marked by significant advancements in infrastructure and a strong focus on gender equity. Her transformative tenure at the university was followed by a shift into politics, where she served as Minister for Education from 2013 under President John Mahama’s administration. During her time as Minister, she championed reforms that included the elimination of makeshift schools, the construction of modern educational facilities, and the provision of free textbooks and school uniforms, all of which significantly advanced Ghana’s education system.

In 2020, she made another history-making move by becoming the first woman nominated as a vice-presidential candidate by a major political party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Her nomination was a powerful symbol of Ghana’s commitment to gender equality and political inclusivity.

As Vice President, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang is expected to lead reforms in key areas such as education, gender equality, and youth empowerment, areas where she has already demonstrated significant influence. Her appointment not only represents a significant achievement for Ghana but also sets a precedent for the broader African continent, inspiring women across the region to pursue leadership roles and challenge traditional gender barriers in politics.

The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, marking the beginning of an era of leadership that promises to transform Ghana’s political and social landscape. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s election stands as a beacon of progress, signaling a brighter future where women take center stage in shaping the nation’s destiny. Her leadership is sure to inspire future generations and contribute to the advancement of Ghana and Africa as a whole.
