A robbery suspect faces a decade behind bars with hard labour in Tumu, northwestern Ghana, following his conviction on firearms and robbery charges.
The Upper West Regional Police Command confirmed the sentence, revealing the arrest stemmed from a dramatic twist of fate – a fatal motor accident near Bugubelle on July 30, 2025.
Responding officers at the crash scene discovered ammunition and an offensive weapon in the suspect’s possession, police said in a statement signed by Deputy Regional Commander ACP Peter Kamasa. Under interrogation, the man admitted knowledge of the weapons and provided details about ongoing robberies within the municipality. He also identified several accomplices, who are still at large.
The suspect was formally charged with robbery, preparation to commit robbery, and unlawful possession of a firearm. After pleading guilty to all counts, His Honour Jonathan Avoogo handed down the 10-year sentence on Monday. Police emphasized they are intensifying efforts to track down the remaining suspects named by the convicted man.
The Regional Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting residents and urged the public to share any information that could lead to the apprehension of the fugitives. Community cooperation is seen as vital to tackling such crimes.
