Cameroon fought valiantly from behind to pick up a point in their U-20 Women’s World Cup debut against Mexico on Saturday at the Estadio Campin in Colombia, with the game ending 2-2.
Mexico twice led through Paola Garcia and Saldivar Montserrat. However, the Mexicans’ 2-0 cushion was wiped out in the second half.
Cameroonian skipper and talisman, Ndjoah Eto gave the Lionesses a lifeline after rounding Mexico’s Renatta Cora in post, before poking the ball home.
With time running out (85), the skipper snatched a point from the jaws of defeat for Cameroon’s young Lionesses with a well-timed strike.
Cameroon’s chances of progressing from the group stages will heavily rely on their skipper, who scored six times in the qualifying rounds for the global showpiece.
Mexico take on Australia next on September 3, while Cameroon face hosts Colombia a day after.
Elsewhere, Canada and France shared the spoils in group B’s thrilling opener. France’s Annabelle Chukwu capped off the free-scoring game with France’s third, ensuring both teams ended the game on level pegging (3-3).
