Ghana forward Enerst Nuamah has expressed regret on behalf of himself and his Black Meteors teammates following their dismal performance in the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Ghana could not proceed to the next stage of the competition despite winning their first match against Congo, therefore, ending their ambitions of returning to the Olympic Games sooner.
After defeating Congo 3-2 thanks to goals from Nuamah and Emmanuel Yevoah, the team failed to retain momentum, falling 5-1 to Morocco.
Despite being one win away from progressing to the next round, Ghana surrendered a first-half lead to Guinea in a distasteful 1-1 draw, forcing them to exit the competition.
Nuamah was on a list of players who were expected to shine in the competition, but he was a pale shadow of himself, leading some to question his devotion to the national team.
While the FC Nordjaelland forward accepts every criticism, he denies being disrespectful because of his current status.
“I have returned to my base to work hard, strive, and grow. This break has been filled with unlocked dreams, lessons, and personal growth while on national duty.
“In accepting this growth path, I’ll take this opportunity to clear unfounded stories of choosing an uninvited All Star Game over Ghana & any one of us feeling bigger than our gifted U23 mates.
“I had issues over health concerns with my team after a long season & fatigue to join the U23 since the tournament was not on FIFA calendar explains why I had to leave after the 2nd game.
“No excuses but our performances as a group was below expectations but personally I could do better. As a group if we ever have the opportunity again, Ghana deserves better.
“I made some wrong decisions but I am grateful for this opportunity,” a statement from Nuamah read.
