West African Football Academy (WAFA) SC have formally informed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) of their intention to withdraw from the Division One League, opting instead to focus their efforts on the comprehensive development of young football talents through their renowned academy system in Sogakope.
WAFA explained in a letter to the GFA that their strategic shift is motivated by a desire to nurture and cultivate future top-tier professionals. This new policy orientation has led the club to withdraw from Zone 2 of the Division One League in order to focus on honing and moulding young footballers within its academy.
In response to this development, the GFA’s Executive Council will utilize its authority under Article 78 of the GFA Statutes to identify a suitable replacement team for WAFA in the Division One League, Zone 2. This decision will be made in line with established precedents and protocols.
WAFA have a notable track record of producing exceptional football talent. Former Black Stars defender Harrison Afful, Samuel Tetteh, Christian Atsu (late), and Majeed Ashimeru have all come through the club’s academy ranks and gone on to make significant contributions to Ghanaian and international football.
WAFA formally known as Feyenoord Football Academy, established by the Dutch football club, was officially commissioned on October 23, 1999, in Gomoa Feteh in the Central Region.
The main objective of the academy in Ghana was to be an extension of Feyenoord’s youth development in Rotterdam. Another essential objective was to set up a structure to groom young talented African soccer players on technical and educational levels.
Wienco a Ghanaian company took over the Academy from Feyenoord Rotterdam in 2009 and was renamed West African Football Academy.
