Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) is 20 years old today, October 10, 2023.
The scheme is aimed to provide equitable access and financial coverage for basic healthcare services to Ghanaian citizens.
As part of measures to streamline the scheme, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye has revealed in an interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi that Ghana, under the sponsorship of the NHIA and the World Health Organization (WHO), will be hosting the first Health Finances Summit in Africa.
The Summit will commence from Thursday, October 12 to Friday, October 13.
“This is the first time that over 60 countries in Africa are coming to Ghana to discuss ways to achieve universal health coverage which is one of the key pillars of the Sustainable Development Goals”, Dr. Okoe Boye told Kwami Sefa Kayi.
The NHIA CEO further disclosed that in view of providing quality healthcare services to Ghanaians and achieving the aim of the health insurance scheme, the Authority on monthly basis provide over 100 million cedis as financial assistance to various health facilities in the country.
“We pay an average of GHC 150 million every 30 days,” he clarified.
