Member of Parliament for Adansi-Asokwa, K.T Hammond has said the NPP Caucus will soon sue the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin for contempt of court following his second indefinite adjournment of the House.
Bagbin on Thursday, November 7, 2024 adjourned the House indefinitely because there was no business order and a lack of quorum because the NPP MPs were not present in the House.
Meanwhile, the NDC MPs occupied the majority seats in Parliament leaving the minority seats to the NPP MPs.
Addressing the media, K.T Hammond noted that the Speaker should have acted based on the Supreme Court ruling which ordered for a stay of execution of Bagbin’s declaration.
The trades minister explained that by not directing the NDC MPs to move to the Minority seats, Bagbin has ignored the order by the Apex court amounting to contempt of court.
“The orders of the Supreme Court were directed specifically to the Speaker. It wasn’t the leadership or the Clerk which made that decision. It was the Speaker of Parliament who unconstitutionally made the proclamation.
“The supreme court told him to restore matters to what they were before you did that. We will cite the Speaker of Parliament for contempt of court…we want the decision of the Supreme Court to be respected,” he said.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 Bagbin explained that it does not fall within his mandate as a Speaker to determine who sits at a majority or minority seat.
He noted that it’s a question of numbers.
“Tt is not the function or the duty of the speaker, it is for MPs to decide, it is a question of numbers,” Bagbin said.
