Who is Michael Mccoy Pennsylvania?
A suspended magistrate judge in Pennsylvania is facing attempted murder and aggravated assault charges for allegedly shooting her ex-boyfriend in the head as he slept last weekend.
Sonya M. McKnight, 57, was arrested on Thursday after police found evidence that linked her to the shooting of Michael McCoy, 54, at his home in the Harrisburg area early Saturday.
According to the arrest affidavit, McCoy had tried to end his one-year relationship with McKnight and asked her to move out of his house several times.
On Friday, Feb. 9, he told her he would seek her mother’s help to get her out of the house. He then went to bed at about 11 p.m. and woke up to a gunshot wound to his right temple that exited his left temple. He was unable to see and felt “massive head pain” as he screamed for help.
McKnight, who was in pajamas on the couch when McCoy came home, called 911 shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday and claimed she was sleeping and heard him screaming.
She also told him, “Mike what did you do to yourself?”
However, McCoy told police at the scene and later at the hospital that he did not shoot himself and that no one else was in the house at the time of the shooting.
Police found gunshot residue on McKnight’s hands an hour after the shooting and discovered that the gun used was registered to her.
They also obtained doorbell videos from neighboring homes that contradicted McKnight’s claim that she did not leave the house the night of the shooting. McCoy suspected she had checked on him at the tavern where he had dinner.
Michael McCoy Pennsylvania, who is now blind in his right eye, said he and McKnight had been dating for a year and that she had moved in with him six months ago.
He said she was “very controlling” and “jealous” and that he had tried to break up with her multiple times. He said he was afraid of her and that she had threatened him before.
McKnight, an elected judge in Dauphin County since 2016, was suspended without pay in mid-November by the Court of Judicial Discipline, which handles misconduct allegations against judges.
She had been previously acquitted of criminal charges in 2021 and had faced prior inquiries by the Judicial Conduct Board of Pennsylvania.
She was not charged in a case for shooting her estranged husband in 2019.
McKnight was arraigned on Thursday and taken to the Dauphin County Prison with bail set at $300,000.
The attempted murder case was transferred from the Dauphin County district attorney’s office, which cited a conflict of interest, to a neighboring prosecutor, Cumberland County District Attorney Sean McCormack.
