Former Speaker of the Ghanaian Parliament, Eddie Asiedu Nketiah, has raised concerns about the awarding of state honours to Deputy Minister for Works and Housing, Alexander Kwamena Acheampong, and Member of Parliament, Mavis Hawa Koomson. According to Nketiah, there is no concrete evidence to justify such an award, citing the lack of achievement and impact of the honourees in their respective roles. He went on to highlight that the two public officials have not demonstrated any significant contributions to the governance and development of the country, which are usually the criteria for such recognition.

Acheampong and Koomson have been mired in controversy, with the former under investigation for alleged breaches of procurement laws and the latter accused of involvement in a parliamentary approval for a contract contract. The former Speaker’s stance has reignited the debate on the transparency and accountability of the political class, with many calling for a re-evaluation of the standard for bestowing national honours.nodoc: His concerns have sparked a nationwide conversation about the need for greater scrutiny and accountability in the awarding of state honours.
