The strike further cemented his status as one of England’s greatest-ever players.Lineker, who held the record since 1990, was quick to congratulate his successor on social media, writing: “Congratulations to Harry Kane. A wonderful player and an even better person. Records are there to be broken, and he’s done it in style.”England, who had already secured their place in the knockout stages before kick-off, finished top of Group L with seven points and will face the runner-up from Group I in the round of 32.For Kane, the record is yet another achievement in a glittering career that has seen him become England’s all-time top scorer overall, with 72 goals in 124 appearances.”The most important thing is that the team is winning and we’re progressing,” he added. “This record is special, but I want to help this team go all the way.”
