Qatar rescued a dramatic point against Switzerland after battling to a 1-1 draw in their opening Group B fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Levi’s Stadium.

The Swiss made the brighter start and took the lead in the 17th minute through striker Breel Embolo, who calmly converted a penalty caused by Remo Freuler

Switzerland looked set to claim all three points as they controlled large periods of the contest and limited Qatar’s attacking opportunities.

However, the Asian side kept pushing and were rewarded deep into additional time when captain Boualem Khoukhi found the equaliser to stun the Swiss and earn his country a valuable point.

The result means both Group B matches have ended in draws after co-hosts Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina also played out a 1-1 stalemate earlier.

The Maroon One will now turn their attention to a crucial clash against hosts Canada on June 18, while the Red Crosses will face Bosnia and Herzegovina on the same day as the battle for qualification in Group B intensifies.

The late goal from Khoukhi could prove significant as Qatar and Switzerland both remain firmly in contention heading into the second round of group matches.
