Zonta Club of Accra II has launched its 30th anniversary celebration in Accra, marking three decades of supporting women and girls through advocacy, service and partnerships.

The year-long celebration is on the theme, “30 Years of Empowering Women and Girls through Advocacy, Service and Partnerships.”

Speaking at the launch on Friday, President of the club, Merley Wood, said the milestone celebrates a journey of impact.

“Today we celebrate not just a date, but a journey of 30 years of empowering women and girls through advocacy, service, and, partnerships,” she noted.

Wood said the club has remained committed to improving lives through projects in education, health, advocacy, the fight against gender-based violence and child marriage.

She highlighted the Girls Scholarship Project launched in 2015, noting that six girls supported from primary school are now in university.

“Six girls who started with the programme in primary school are now Level 200 university students pursuing degrees in veterinary medicine, food technology, public health, business administration and the arts. We continue to support them with annual scholarships to ease the burden of tertiary education,” Wood elaborated.

The club has made a meaningful impact in the country for more than 55 years. According to Wood, within District 18, five clubs- Accra, Tema, Accra II, Metropolitan, and Jubilee- continue to champion the rights and well-being of women and girls.

Additionally, she noted that in 2018, through partnerships with the Australian High Commission and GCB Bank, the club renovated the Chenard Ward and has continued to support it under a 10-year memorandum of understanding.

She said it has also nurtured exceptional leadership, with three members rising to serve as District Governors and two serving as International Directors.

She noted that the launch begins a year-long celebration and renewed efforts to support more girls, including a new batch from Teshie Salem Presbyterian Primary School.

A beneficiary, Mercy Asare, thanked the club for its support and pledged that beneficiaries would give back to society. “If it was not for them, we would not be here today,” she said.

The event brought together Zontians, beneficiaries, partners and guests to celebrate the club’s legacy and renewed commitment to advancing the status of women and girls.
