Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Mustapha Ussif is urging Ghanaians to be rest assured about the 2023 Africa Games facilities at the University of Ghana, which he guarantees will be completed before the end of the year.
During an inspection of the facilities in the school which are marked to be used for competition, the minister was convinced the progress in construction was positive assuring all and sundry to be hopeful of a successful event next year.
The stadium at the school which is expected to host a number of sporting events including all track and field events, as well as football is still under construction ahead of the games.
However, Mustapha Ussif is confident all operations on the facility, as well as other venues for the multisports event, will all be completed before the deadline.
“To assure the country and media, we will finish the facilities and do testing before the Games,” Mustapha Ussif said after the inspection.
“We are not grappling with meeting deadlines. We are on track and are going to ensure the contractors complete the facilities on time. The contractor did indicate we are almost 70% complete [with the stadium] – some of the other facilities are at 80%. The Games village is almost 85% complete.”
The rugby field is expected to host the rugby competition while the diaspora halls and immediate surroundings are expected to be transformed into the Games village.
The 2023 African Games will take place between March 8 and March 23, 2024.
While the event acts as a qualifying ground for 12 of the approximately 25 fixed disciplines for the 2024 Olympic Games, competitors are expected to arrive in Ghana between March 5-7, 2024.
