Mexico secured their second consecutive victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 win over South Korea at Estadio Akron, becoming the first nation to qualify for the knockout phase.
The Group A encounter was a tightly contested affair, with both sides cancelling each other out during a cagey first half that ended goalless.
The breakthrough arrived five minutes after the restart when Guadalajara defender Luis Romo found the back of the net to hand El Tri a precious lead.
South Korea responded positively and pushed forward in search of an equaliser, creating several dangerous opportunities as the match entered its closing stages.
However, Mexican goalkeeper Raúl Rangel produced a stunning double save in the 87th minute to preserve his side’s advantage and deny the Asians a late leveller.
The crucial intervention ensured Javier Aguirre’s men claimed all three points and maintained their perfect start to the tournament.
The victory moves Mexico to the top of Group A and guarantees their place in the knockout rounds with one match still to play.
The Tricolors will wrap up their group campaign against the Czech Republic on June 25, while South Korea face South Africa in a must-win encounter on the same day.
