Chief Executive Officer of Aduana FC, Collins Atta Poku, has urged authorities to strengthen security for Ghana Premier League teams during matchday travels following the death of forward Dominic Frimpong.
The 20-year-old striker, who was on loan at Berekum Chelsea, died after armed robbers attacked the team bus on their return journey from a league fixture against FC Samartex last Sunday night.
Speaking in an interview with 3Sports, Atta Poku described the incident as deeply painful and called for urgent measures to protect players and officials on the road.
To know someone that closely, and work with someone closely like that, it is painful Its very painful, he said.
He stressed the need for police escort on team buses, particularly for night travels, despite acknowledging logistical constraints faced by security agencies.
It’s necessary that we get police on our buses when we are going to these games. We know the numbers are a little stretched, but we have to do something about it at some point to make sure that we have enough security on the bus when we are travelling, especially at night, he added.
Atta Poku also pointed to accommodation challenges that often force clubs to travel immediately after matches, increasing their exposure to risk.
A lot of planning goes into it; sometimes it’s difficult, and we dont have the resources to sleep over in such situations.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has launched a manhunt for those responsible for the attack.
