Cape Verde have become the first team to advance to the Round of 16 in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following a convincing 3-0 triumph over Mozambique on Friday afternoon.
The Blue Sharks, who previously secured a late victory against Ghana in their opening match, demonstrated their prowess against the Mambas, ensuring a commanding performance.
Bebe, the former Manchester United player, was instrumental in Cape Verde’s success, opening the scoring with a powerful strike that found the back of the net. The 33-year-old showcased persistence, attempting a long-range free-kick earlier in the game that hit the woodwork.
He finally put Cape Verde into the lead with an impressive goal from an even more challenging angle, leaving the Mozambique goalkeeper helpless in the 32nd minute.
Despite a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review leading to a change in the referee’s decision regarding a penalty call to Mozambique Cape Verde continued to dominate.
Ryan Mendes capitalised on a defensive mistake, securing the second goal for Cape Verde in the 51stth minute. The victory was sealed with a spectacular long-range shot from Kevin Lenini, solidifying Cape Verde’s impressive performance.
With six points in Group B, Cape Verde have secured their spot in the Round of 16. The Blue Sharks will face Egypt on Monday with the assurance of topping the group, offering them the luxury of entering the next stage with nothing to lose.
Meanwhile, Mozambique will have to win at all costs just like their opponents Ghana on Monday to stand a chance of proceeding to the next stage of the competition.
Their exceptional display in the tournament is bound to make them a team to watch in the upcoming stages of AFCON 2023.
