The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has held discussions with the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, and other key stakeholders to address recurring damage to fibre optic cables during road construction and rehabilitation works across Ghana.
The engagement focused on improving coordination among road agencies, contractors and telecommunications service providers to prevent damage to underground cables and minimise disruptions to communication services.
The meeting comes amid concerns over the impact of road construction activities on critical digital infrastructure, with cable cuts potentially disrupting telecommunications services.
Participants underscored the need for early planning, effective information-sharing and closer collaboration among institutions responsible for road construction and telecommunications infrastructure.
They noted that improved coordination would help ensure fibre optic cables are identified and protected before excavation and other construction activities begin.
The engagement forms part of broader efforts to safeguard critical infrastructure while ensuring the efficient implementation of road projects.
Stronger collaboration between the roads and communications sectors is expected to reduce avoidable cable damage, limit service interruptions and support Ghana’s digital development objectives.
