Prof Godfred Bokpin

Economist Godfred Bokpin asserts former President Nana Akufo-Addo missed a historic opportunity to transform Ghana despite commanding a parliamentary majority in 2017.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, the University of Ghana professor stated: “Ghanaians had high expectations… but unfortunately, very little was done in terms of structural and productivity-enhancing reforms.”

Bokpin contrasted this with the current Mahama administration’s position, noting the National Democratic Congress (NDC) now holds similar legislative advantage and public goodwill. He cautioned that failing to enact bold governance and economic overhauls today would lead to future regrets, emphasizing: “History offers a second chance to shift Ghana’s trajectory.”

The critique surfaces amid ongoing IMF pressure for structural reforms in energy and cocoa sectors – challenges inherited from the previous NPP government.
