The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has given traders and hawkers occupying unauthorised bus stops across the metropolis 48 hours to cease trading and vacate the locations ahead of an enforcement exercise.

In a press release dated Wednesday, November 4, 2026, the Assembly directed all traders operating at designated bus stops to immediately remove their belongings and stop trading in the affected areas.

The directive follows concerns raised by commercial drivers over the obstruction of designated stopping points, which the Assembly says affects the movement of vehicles and pedestrians and poses risks to public safety.

According to the AMA, the occupation of bus stops by hawkers contributes to traffic congestion and forces commuters to board and alight from vehicles at unsafe locations, increasing the risk of road accidents.

The Assembly said the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, had already initiated enforcement measures, including the removal of traders occupying unauthorised spaces at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, Achimota and parts of the Central Business District (CBD).

The AMA has urged traders to comply with the directive and refrain from conducting business in areas reserved for the movement of vehicles and pedestrians.

It warned that enforcement would be intensified and persons who disregard the directive would face the necessary action in accordance with the Assembly’s by-laws.

The Assembly also cautioned traders against returning to locations that have been cleared, warning that reoccupation of bus stops could attract further enforcement action, including prosecution.

The AMA said the exercise forms part of efforts to maintain public order, improve road safety and ensure the proper use of public spaces across the metropolis.
