Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has reflected on how the 2006 FIFA World Cup transformed his career and elevated his status in world football.

Speaking about the impact of Ghana’s maiden World Cup appearance in Germany, Gyan revealed that he was playing in Italy’s Serie B before the tournament but earned greater recognition after his performances on the global stage.

According to the former striker, his displays at the World Cup convinced Italian club Udinese Calcio to recall him, believing he was ready to compete in Serie A. The tournament also attracted interest from several clubs across Europe, including Russian side FC Lokomotiv Moscow, who reportedly offered him a lucrative contract.

Gyan disclosed that his improved reputation after the World Cup earned him one of the highest-paying contracts at Udinese at the time.

The ex-Black Stars captain said the experience made him realise the importance of the FIFA World Cup, describing it as the ultimate platform for players to showcase their talent and change the course of their careers through strong performances on football’s biggest stage.
