Ghana captain Jordan Ayew has welcomed skepticism surrounding the Black Stars’ chances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that doubts about the team’s prospects will only serve as extra motivation.
Speaking ahead of the tournament in the United States, Ayew acknowledged the difficult task facing Ghana in Group L, where they will come up against England, Croatia and Panama. Despite many observers predicting a challenging campaign for the Black Stars, the forward remains confident the team can exceed expectations.
“We have to prove ourselves and show that we have quality,” Ayew said. “Obviously, I know people don’t think that we will do well, so that is good. I like it when people think like that.”
The Black Stars are preparing for their fifth World Cup appearance and are aiming to reach the knockout stages for the first time since the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
After suffering group-stage eliminations in 2014 and 2022, Ghana are determined to make a stronger impression this time around. Their campaign begins against Panama on June 18 before crucial clashes with England and Croatia in what promises to be a fiercely contested group.
