Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, says Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah is wanted for arrest as part of an Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) investigation into alleged unauthorised financial transactions at SIC Life Savings and Loans Company Limited.
According to Dr Srem-Sai, the investigation concerns alleged offences including financial loss, dissipation of public funds and money laundering.
He confirmed that an Accra High Court has issued a warrant authorising EOCO to arrest the legislator, following the agency’s claim that it had exhausted reasonable efforts to secure his voluntary attendance.
“I can confirm that the High Court has issued a warrant for the arrest of Mr Agyei Baffour Awuah (Hon. MP), who has, since February 2026, refused to honour an EOCO criminal investigative invitation,” Dr Srem-Sai said in a post on September 30.
He added that the intended arrest forms part of an inquiry into a complaint concerning alleged unauthorised financial transactions at SIC Life Savings and Loans.
The High Court has also authorised EOCO to search for and seize documents considered relevant to the investigation. EOCO told the court that it feared relevant documents could be concealed, altered or destroyed. The court directed that the arrest warrant be executed through the Speaker of Parliament.
The development follows an attempted arrest of Mr Baffour Awuah at the Accra High Court on September 23. EOCO subsequently said the action followed two invitations issued to him in February 2026.
The MP has disputed EOCO’s account, saying the February invitation was addressed to him in his capacity as Senior Partner of Sarkodie Baffour Awuah & Partners, which had been engaged by SIC Life Savings and Loans to recover funds.
He said he referred the invitation to the Clerk to Parliament after becoming an MP, and that a representative of the law firm subsequently appeared before EOCO on March 4, March 18 and April 30. According to him, the representative also submitted a written statement to investigators on April 30.
Mr Baffour Awuah has maintained that he was not the subject of the investigation and that there had been no further invitation to him before the attempted arrest on September 23.
The financial transactions under investigation relate to SIC Life Savings and Loans’ investment of about GH¢3.5 million with the defunct Equity Savings and Loans, according to Mr Baffour Awuah. He has said the amount, including accrued interest, had grown to about GH¢14 million before his former firm was engaged to recover the funds. (Channel1 News)
EOCO has not publicly disclosed the full details of the alleged offences or the specific transactions forming the basis of its investigation.
The Ghana Bar Association criticised the manner of the September 23 attempted arrest, while Majority Leader James Agalga questioned whether EOCO should have routed action concerning a sitting MP through Parliament.
The latest court order gives EOCO authority to proceed with the arrest and to search for and seize relevant documents. The allegations against Mr Baffour Awuah remain under investigation and have not been determined by a court.
