The Member of Parliament for Bekwai, Ralph Poku-Adusei, on Monday, October 12, 2026, paid a working visit to the Bekwai Municipal Hospital to engage management and staff on the facility’s achievements, ongoing projects and operational challenges.
The visit, which included familiarisation and inspection activities, underscored the MP’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery as a foundation for development, alongside education and agriculture.
A key highlight of the visit was an inspection of progress on the KNUST Medical School project, located on the hospital premises. The MP was briefed on the project, which, according to management, has received support from VALCO and is expected to transform the hospital into a teaching and training hub for future doctors while bringing specialist consultants closer to residents of Bekwai.
Addressing staff, Poku-Adusei commended the dedication and sacrifices of health professionals, particularly their efforts in steering the facility’s transition from a primary healthcare facility to a secondary-level hospital accredited by the Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA).
“Life is precious and good health is fundamental to everything we do. My commitment to supporting the welfare of my constituents transcends political differences,” he emphasised.
Management, led by Medical Superintendent Dr Serebour, used the opportunity to outline key challenges confronting the hospital following its elevation to secondary-level status.
These include limited capacity at the emergency unit, the absence of a dedicated isolation unit, inadequate accommodation for critical health personnel, the lack of a CT scan facility and delays associated with laboratory equipment.
Management also disclosed that the hospital has available land for expansion but requires support for infrastructure development. It expressed interest in exploring public-private partnerships (PPPs) to establish a CT scan and advanced diagnostic centre.
The MP was further briefed on plans to introduce a queue management system to improve patient flow, reduce congestion and minimise misunderstandings between patients and staff.
Beyond financial support, Poku-Adusei committed to providing free airtime on his FM platform to educate the public on hospital procedures, patient rights and health protocols, an initiative aimed at improving public awareness and cooperation.
The visit ended with both the MP and hospital management agreeing to maintain continuous engagement to help transform the Bekwai Municipal Hospital into a centre of excellence in the Ashanti Region.
