Ghanaian midfielder Bernard Mensah was the hero of the night as he scored a header to secure Al Tai’s 3-1 victory over Al-Fateh in the Saudi Pro League on Thursday evening.
The game, which was played at the Prince Abdul Aziz bin Musa’ed Stadium, saw Mensah last the full game and make a significant impact in the second half.
The first half of the game was a closely contested affair, with both teams creating chances but failing to convert them. However, it was Al-Fateh who took the lead in the 3rd minute, thanks to a right-footed shot from Djaniny following a fast break.
Al Tai responded well to going behind and drew level in the 11th minute, with Robert Bauer scoring a header from very close range following a corner. The rest of the first half was evenly matched, with neither team able to break the deadlock.
The second half started with both teams pushing for the win, but it was Al Tai who were dealt a blow in the 56th minute when Ali Al Zubaidi of Al-Fateh was shown a second yellow card for a bad foul. This gave Al Tai the numerical advantage, and they made it count in the 82nd minute.
Mensah, who had been a constant threat in the second half, rose highest in the box to head home a corner and give Al Tai a 2-1 lead. The goal was a sensational one, with Mensah showing great timing and technique to beat the keeper.
Al Tai held on to secure the 3-1 victory, with Mensah’s goal proving to be the difference between the two teams.
The Ghanaian midfielder has been in great form this season, playing 28 games, scoring 14 goals, and assisting once in the Saudi Pro League. His performances have seen him rise to 9th on the Saudi Pro League top scorers list.
