Birim Charity, Sharjah Charity support over 700 orphans in Eastern Region

Over the weekend, the streets of Akim Oda Zongo were filled with a renewed sense of hope as the Birim Charity Organisation, in partnership with the UAE-based Sharjah Charity International, conducted its bi-annual disbursement of the Orphan Support Program.

The exercise is a critical component of a long-standing international partnership signed in 2018 between Accra and Sharjah. Currently, the initiative provides a lifeline to over 700 orphans across five regions of Ghana, ensuring that the most vulnerable members of society are not left behind.

A lifeline for the vulnerable

The program specifically targets orphans and needy families, providing financial stipends designed to cover essential costs for food and clothing. Since its founding in June 2017, Birim Charity has remained steadfast in its mission to combat poverty and hunger from its headquarters in Akim Oda.

“Our vision is to see these children properly integrated into a community where healthcare, nutrition, and education are accessible to all,” stated the organization’s leadership during the event.

Community leadership shows strong support

The weekend’s activities saw high-level attendance from local traditional and political leaders, signaling the community’s deep investment in the program’s success. Representatives of the Zongo Chiefs, led by the Gonja and Hausa Chiefs of the Akim Oda Zongo communities, were present to witness the disbursement.

Also in attendance was Hon. Ayuba Nuhu, the Assembly Member for the Kyeremin Number 2 electoral area, representing the Birim Central Assembly. His presence underscored the vital collaboration between non-governmental organizations and local government structures in driving social change.

Expert execution

The successful execution of the weekend’s program was spearheaded by Lead Project Manager and Director, Engr. Tawfik Prah Meekail, along with a dedicated field team. The entire operation was superintended by the Chairman of Birim Charity, Sheikh Meekail I. Prah, whose leadership has been instrumental in maintaining the robust partnership with Sharjah Charity International.

As the bi-annual program continues to scale, Birim Charity remains a beacon of hope in the Eastern Region, proving that through strategic international partnerships and local dedication, the cycle of poverty can be broken.
