The Black Stars of Ghana have etched their name into FIFA World Cup history after becoming only the fifth African team to keep clean sheets in their opening two matches of a World Cup tournament.
Ghana began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama before producing another disciplined defensive display in a goalless draw against England in their second Group L fixture.
The achievement places Ghana alongside Cameroon (1982), Morocco (1986 and 2022) and Nigeria (2014) as the only African nations to avoid conceding a goal in their first two matches at a World Cup.
While the Black Stars have earned praise for their defensive organization and resilience, concerns remain over their attacking output. Ghana are currently the only team at the tournament yet to register a shot in the first half of a match.
According to Opta, the Black Stars have also equaled an unwanted World Cup record, becoming just the second team in tournament history to complete two consecutive first halves without an attempt on goal, matching Costa Rica’s feat in 1990.
Despite those attacking concerns, Ghana remain well placed in Group L and will face Croatia on Saturday in a crucial final group-stage encounter.
