Mexico striker Julián Quiñones made history on Thursday by scoring the opening goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in his country’s clash against South Africa at the Estadio Azteca.

The Al Qadsiah forward struck in the ninth minute, becoming the tournament’s first goalscorer and continuing the rich vein of form that saw him dominate the Saudi Pro League during the 2025/26 season.

Quiñones’ success has been closely linked to his partnership with Ghana international Christopher Bonsu Baah at Al Qadsiah. The duo formed one of the league’s most productive attacking combinations, helping the club emerge as a major force in Saudi Arabian football.

The Mexican forward finished the campaign as the league’s top scorer with 33 goals, while Bonsu Baah contributed three goals and 12 assists, ranking among the division’s leading creators.

Their chemistry was instrumental to Al Qadsiah’s impressive season and has now carried over onto the global stage for Quiñones.

Meanwhile, Bonsu Baah is preparing for his own World Cup campaign with Ghana. The Black Stars begin their Group L journey against Panama on June 17 before facing England six days later in Boston.
