Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has stepped down from his role following Ghana’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing an end to his brief spell in charge of the national team.
The 73-year-old was appointed after the dismissal of Otto Addo following the March international window and was tasked with guiding Ghana to a successful World Cup campaign in hopes of earning a permanent contract.
Queiroz led the Black Stars to the knockout stage for the first time in 16 years before their journey ended with a Round of 32 defeat to Colombia. Despite the exit, Ghana earned praise for restoring competitiveness on the global stage.
Confirming his departure in a statement on social media, the Portuguese coach expressed pride in the team’s progress while admitting there was still more to achieve.
“Football, like life, teaches us one timeless lesson: you either win or you learn. I leave this journey with pride in what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always wanted more,” Queiroz wrote.
He stressed that the future success of the Black Stars must be built beyond the pitch, calling for a better environment to develop Ghana’s football talent. He also thanked the Ghana Football Association, his players, technical staff and supporters for their trust and commitment during his time in charge.
“To the fans, we cannot claim complete sporting satisfaction, but we can proudly say that we honoured the colours of Ghana and restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on football’s greatest stage. Thank you, Ghana. The journey starts now. To the future,” he concluded.
Queiroz’s resignation now leaves the Ghana Football Association searching for a new head coach ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the next Africa Cup of Nations.
