Tunisia have sacked their head coach Sabri Lamouchi following intense pressure after the Carthage Eagles suffered an embarrassing 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The heavy loss exposed Tunisia’s defensive frailties and sparked immediate calls for change, with the Tunisian Football Federation acting swiftly to dismiss the French tactician less than 24 hours after the defeat.

Former Tunisia manager Mondher Kebaier has been appointed to take immediate charge of the national team for the remainder of the tournament.

Kebaier, who previously guided the Carthage Eagles between 2019 and 2022, now faces the difficult task of reviving Tunisia’s World Cup campaign after their disastrous start.

Lamouchi’s departure also makes him the first coach to lose his job at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, underlining the growing pressure on managers at the tournament.

Tunisia must now regroup quickly as they seek to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive under new leadership when they face Japan next in what will a very difficult game on June 21.
