Cameroonian Football Federation President Samuel Eto’o Fils is currently under investigation in Cameroon for his alleged involvement in match-fixing during a second-tier football match in July 2023.
The former Barcelona striker has been implicated in a scandal where he was caught on tape discussing potential match manipulation to secure Victory United’s promotion in Cameroonian football. Both Eto’o and the President of the club have vehemently denied these allegations.
Cameroonian authorities have expressed concerns that Samuel Eto’o may be exploiting his position of authority to engage in corruption, which has reportedly become increasingly pervasive since he assumed the role of FA President in December 2021.
This isn’t the first time Eto’o’s conduct has come under scrutiny. He has been reported to FIFA on multiple occasions, including a recent incident where he was recorded verbally abusing an Algerian journalist after a FIFA World Cup 2022 Qualifier match.
If found guilty of the offences attributed to him, Eto’o could face severe consequences, including a potential 10-year prison sentence, alongside 40 other officials associated with the Cameroonian Football Association.
