Cape Verde’s historic 2026 FIFA World Cup debut was made even more special after President José Maria Neves paid a visit to the Blue Sharks’ dressing room following their memorable 0-0 draw against Spain.
The Head of State personally congratulated the players and technical team after the final whistle, praising their spirited display against the European giants and thanking them for making the nation proud.
The result marked a historic moment for Cape Verde, who were playing in their first-ever FIFA World Cup match and managed to hold one of the tournament favourites to a goalless draw.
President Neves reportedly greeted every member of the squad, applauding their determination and commitment in a performance that has already become one of the biggest moments in the country’s football history.
Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha was the standout performer on the night and was deservedly named Man of the Match after producing a string of impressive saves to deny the Spanish attack.
The point against Spain has given the Blue Sharks a dream start to life at the World Cup and sparked celebrations among Cape Verdeans both at home and abroad.
With history already made, Cape Verde will now turn their attention to the rest of the tournament as they look to continue their fairytale debut on football’s biggest stage.
