The Paramount Chief of Madina Zongo, Ali Abdulai, is betting on education as a long-term tool to reshape the future of Zongo communities.

His latest initiative, sponsoring two top-performing pupils, Jamal Mohammed Amal and Adiza Mohammed Amal, from Zara Memorial School to embark on a 10-day educational trip to Spain, forms part of a broader plan to institutionalise motivation and exposure among young people in the community.

The siblings topped the entire term examination. Jamal led in Mathematics and Science, while Adiza was first in English and Social Studies. Their names went straight to the notice board and the whole school celebrated them.

Speaking in an interview during his visit to the school, Chief Abdullai said the programme, developed over nearly five years, is designed to challenge long-held stereotypes by repositioning Zongo communities as hubs of ambition and achievement.

“We want to build a generation that sees education not just as a requirement, but as a pathway to opportunity,” he said.

The annual sponsorship scheme, he noted, is structured to reward academic distinction while creating a ripple effect among peers. By exposing beneficiaries to experiences beyond Ghana, the initiative seeks to encourage others to pursue excellence.

Chief Abdullai said the choice of Spain was deliberate, citing its cultural diversity and agricultural strength as key areas for the students’ learning.

“We are not only exposing them to a different culture, but also to practical sectors like farming, which remain critical to our development,” he said.

Looking ahead, the chief said he intends to expand the initiative and deepen investment in education as a foundation stone of community development.

“As leaders, our legacy must be reflected in the people we raise. If we invest in their education, we secure the future of the community,” he noted.

He added that sustained focus on education would help produce disciplined, skilled and forward-thinking individuals capable of driving change within Zongo communities and beyond.

The pupils also shared their excitement about their impending visit, hoping to learn new things, as well as inspiring their classmates to also improve their performance.
