A couple and their grandson who died when their car crashed into a wall in Ireland have been named by police.

Thomas O’Reilly, 45, Bridget O’Reilly, 46, and Tom O’Reilly, 3, were killed at Windmill, Knockbulloge, Cashel, in Co. Tipperary on Monday night.

A man and woman, both 22, who were in the front of the car, remain in Tipperary University Hospital.

Police confirmed all five were from the same family.

The man is being treated for serious injuries, while the woman is less severely hurt.

Superintendent Kieran Ruane said the scene of the crash “was traumatic and very difficult for everyone in attendance”.

“The professionalism shown by all first responders and the compassion shown to the three deceased was commendable,” he added.

Post-mortem examinations were due to take place on Wednesday at Waterford University Hospital and a family liaison officer is supporting relatives.

The road where the crash happened – situated about halfway between Limerick and Waterford in the centre of the country – remains closed while crash experts investigate.

It comes days after four people were killed in a crash in Clonmel, also in Co Tipperary.

Luke McSweeney, 24, his 18-year-old sister Grace McSweeney, Zoey Coffey and Nicole Murphy, both also 18, were killed after the car they were in struck a wall on Friday.
