Desmond OfeiWith Carlos Queiroz’s future as Black Stars head coach hanging in the balance, assistant coach Desmond Ofei has emerged as a strong internal candidate to take over the reins should the Portuguese tactician not be retained.Queiroz’s four-month contract, signed in April 2026, is set to expire in August. While he guided Ghana to the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup, negotiations over a contract extension have reportedly stalled due to the coach’s demands.Desmond Ofei is already well-integrated into the Black Stars setup, currently serving as an assistant coach under Queiroz. He previously held the same role under Otto Addo and has also been the head coach of the Black Satellites (U-20 team) and the Black Meteors (U-23 team). Ofei has also previously led the Black Stars in a friendly against Mexico when Queiroz was absent.Executive Council members are reportedly divided on the decision. While some are in favour of Ofei taking charge, they are concerned about potential public backlash. Meanwhile, the GFA is also in talks with other coaches for the role. With the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers approaching in September, the GFA faces mounting pressure to resolve the coaching situation quickly.
