Dr Hilla Liman Technical University holds 5th Congregation ceremony

Dr Hilla Liman Technical University, formerly known as Wa Polytechnic has organized its fifth congregation ceremony for the award of Higher National Diploma (HND) to the 2023 batch of graduands.

The colourful ceremony took place at the forecourt of the University Kpongu campus in Wa, Upper West Region, on Saturday, May 18, 2024.

The Region’s premier Technical University, which was started in September 1999, was not until 2002 that the interim Governing Council was appointed by Government to provide policy direction to the Institute.

The first batch of tertiary students was admitted in 2003 to pursue HND in Agriculture Engineering and Secretary ship and Management Studies.

At the fifth congregation the University graduated 678 students comprising 251 females and 427 males in various fields of endeavor, with Higher National Diploma (HND).

Speaking at the congregation, Chief Sulemana Nabila, the Chairman of the Governing Council expressed worry about the long stall projects dotted across the campus.

Chief Nabil said “across the University campus, there are numerous projects that have been left unfinished due to various reasons, leaving behind uncompleted structures. I urge contractors who have been entrusted with the responsibility of executing these projects to fulfil their obligations and complete the work they have started”.

He also calls upon the government to provide the necessary funds and resources for the completion of the abandoned projects as he said the projects are vital for the development of our University.

The Upper West Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu through the Regional Co-ordinating Director of the RCC, Peter M. Maala indicated that he is aware of the numerous challenges confronting students and lectures on campus, particularly hotels and that of accommodation for lecturers.

“As the Regional Minister, I pledged my full support and commitment to working closely with the University administration, the relevant government agencies, and other partners to address this infrastructure challenges. Together we will explore innovative financing mechanisms, engage with private sector investors, and leverage available resources to expedite the construction of new hostels and accommodation facilities on campus”, he stated.

Sir Prof. Elias N. K. Sowley, Vice Chancellor of the University while admonishing graduates to remain connected to their Alma mata and give back to the University that natured and supported them in their academic journey, reiterated the university challenges.
“There is the urgent need for a faculty building, lecture theaters, an auditorium, and lecture halls”, Sir Prof. Sowley listed.

Addo-Boateng Amanda from the Business School, Department of Purchasing and supply emerged as the overall best graduating student with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.6.

Addo-Boateng Amanda together with other graduating student were awarded for their sterling performances.

On their part, Waris Anaaka, leader of the Alumni Association, announced that they are offering a full tuition scholarship to the top graduating student of the 2023 cohort. The scholarship will enable the recipient to pursue any B.Tech program of her choice at the University.
