‘Eat humble pie’ – Afenyo-Markin challenges NDC over GH¢22bn GoldBod losses

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has challenged the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to acknowledge what he describes as policy failures that contributed to the reported GH¢22 billion losses under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP) in 2025.

Mr Afenyo-Markin said the Minority’s concerns about the reported losses were based on facts and should not be dismissed as an attempt to undermine the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod). He insisted that the government must account for the losses and focus on measures to prevent a recurrence.

The comments come amid a public dispute between the Minority and GoldBod Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi. Mr Gyamfi has accused the Minority Leader of pursuing a smear campaign against GoldBod rather than engaging in genuine public accountability.

Mr Afenyo-Markin, however, maintained that he would not be distracted by the personal attacks and would continue to scrutinise the operations of GoldBod in the interest of the public. He also called for greater civility in political discourse, stressing that disagreements should not undermine mutual respect.

Speaking to Metro TV, he said the NDC should “eat humble pie” and acknowledge the policy shortcomings behind the reported losses so that the two sides could focus on finding a solution.

“We expect the NDC to be reasonable and eat humble pie, and admit that, indeed, policy failures resulted in this. So that perhaps we can look at the way forward,” he said.

Mr Afenyo-Markin said he would continue pursuing the matter regardless of the criticism directed at him, insisting that his position was motivated by his commitment to the NPP and the need to ensure accountability.

“But to be attacking us, I will stay there, deal with the issues, and pursue it. However lonely I may become, I am doing this for the party, and the right thing will be done,” he said.
