Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, Jean Mensa, has advocated that the Ghana Card will be the sole identification document for the 2024 elections.

Speaking in Parliament, she emphasised that this move aims to ensure a credible voters’ register and streamline the authentication process for eligible voters.

The EC Chairperson added that the exclusive reliance on the Ghana Card would significantly reduce the tensions and conflicts that often accompany the voter registration exercise.

“By adopting the Ghana Card as the sole identification document, we are taking a crucial step towards ensuring that our voters’ register is credible and reflective of the true voting population,” she said.

The Ghana Card, which contains comprehensive biometric data and other vital information, is expected to simplify the electoral process by offering a streamlined approach to voter verification.

According to her, this shift is expected to address longstanding challenges in maintaining an accurate and credible voters’ register, which has been a contentious issue in previous elections.

She also assured Parliament that efforts are underway to facilitate the issuance of Ghana Cards to all eligible voters.

She called for collaboration between the Electoral Commission, the National Identification Authority (NIA), and other relevant stakeholders to ensure a smooth and inclusive registration process.
