The Electoral Commission (EC) on Friday, September 20, 2024 announced that it has cleared some 13 presidential aspirants eligible to contest for the 2024 elections.
The EC also noted that some aspirants were unable to pass the thorough review process and hence they were disqualified.
The candidates who were disqualified after the thorough review process are; Samuel Appiah Danquah, an Independent candidate, Janet Nabla, an Independent candidate, Desmond Abrefa, an Independent candidate, Nana Agyepong Stevens, an Independent candidate, Paul Perko, an Independent candidate, Bernard Mornah of the PNC, James Kwesi Oppong, an Independent Candidate, Samuel Sarpong Ankrah, an Independent candidate, Nii Amu Darko, an Independent candidate and Asamoah Siaw of the Progressive People’s Party.
According to the EC, Flagbearer of the Progressive Alliance for Ghana, John Kweku KpiKpi denounced his nomination after filing.
Majority of these persons were the independent candidates including the Flagbearer for the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah.
The EC in a press briefing explained that these persons had errors and omissions in their forms while some of them had the same signatures being used for other people.
Chair of the Commission, Jean Adukwei Mensa said the commission does not have the power to determine who wins the elections.
She noted that the power to do so rests with Ghanaians who will cast their ballot in the elections.
Addressing a press conference after announcing the approved presidential candidates, in Accra on Friday September 20, she said “We don’t have the power to determine who wins elections, it is only the citizens and the citizens alone who can determine who wins, not the EC.”
