Eleven individuals died early Tuesday in a catastrophic collision between a fuel tanker and a passenger bus near Amanase, a town along the busy Accra-Kumasi Highway.

The crash occurred around 5:00 a.m. on April 22, when the tanker, registered GR 1300-16, veered into the path of an oncoming Benz Sprinter bus, GW 6510-23, sparking a head-on impact.

Preliminary police reports suggest the tanker driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, causing the vehicle to drift out of its lane. The collision claimed the lives of nine men and two women, while multiple survivors with critical injuries were transported to Suhum Government Hospital. Emergency teams from the Ghana National Fire Service and local police swiftly secured the scene, managing traffic and aiding rescue efforts.

Suhum Municipal Fire Service PRO ADO1 Akonnor Opare Ohene Daniel confirmed the incident, stating medical personnel were prioritizing stabilization of the injured. Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Awatey visited the hospital to assess victims’ conditions and coordinate additional care, including potential transfers to specialized facilities.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash, which underscores persistent road safety challenges on one of Ghana’s most vital transit corridors. The Accra-Kumasi Highway has seen multiple fatal accidents in recent years, prompting calls for enhanced enforcement of traffic regulations and driver fatigue protocols. While the government has initiated road safety campaigns, this incident highlights the urgent need for sustained measures to protect commuters and freight operators alike.

Minister Awatey’s immediate response reflects broader efforts to address transportation risks, yet the recurring nature of such tragedies signals systemic gaps in infrastructure and regulatory oversight. As Ghana grapples with rising vehicular traffic, balancing economic mobility with public safety remains a critical priority for policymakers and communities dependent on these arterial routes.
