Ghana Premier League leaders Nations FC caused major controversy on Sunday, June 1, 2025, by abandoning their penultimate league game against Basake Holy Stars in a dramatic walk-off.

The incident occurred midway through the second half, with Holy Stars leading 1-0 after converting a penalty in the 32nd minute. Tensions escalated sharply after the referee awarded a second penalty to the home side, sparking furious protests from Nations FC’s players and coaching staff.

The decision ignited a heated on-field altercation, with players exchanging words and pushing the boundaries of sportsmanship. Security personnel quickly stepped in to separate the players and restore order on the pitch.

Despite attempts to resume play, Nations FC’s players and technical team left the field in protest, stunning spectators and officials.

Nations FC entered the match with a four-point lead at the top of the league table, with just two games remaining. They needed at least one more win to claim their first-ever Ghana Premier League title, making Sunday’s fixture pivotal in their title chase.

The abrupt abandonment has now cast doubt over their championship hopes, with the match outcome—and the league title—hanging in the balance. The Ghana Football Association is expected to review the incident and determine the appropriate course of action in the coming days.

The governing body will likely assess whether disciplinary measures are warranted and how to address the controversial officiating. The episode has reignited concerns over refereeing standards and underscores the high stakes and intense emotions at play in the title race.
