
Carlos Queiroz has stepped down as Ghana coach following a difficult start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, rather than being sacked by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Ghanasoccernet.com exclusively reveal.The 73-year-old Portuguese coach decided to leave his position after Ghana suffered successive defeats against Ivory Coast and The Gambia in Group C.Queiroz, who replaced Otto Addo in April, had initially agreed a short-term deal to lead the Black Stars through the 2026 World Cup and was subsequently expected to remain in charge for the AFCON qualifiers.He guided Ghana to the knockout phase of the World Cup for the first time since 2010 before the team returned to competitive action with a 2-0 defeat by Ivory Coast in Bouake in the opening game of the AFCON qualifiers.The Black Stars then suffered another setback against The Gambia, surrendering a 2-0 lead to lose 4-2 at the Accra Sports Stadium.The two defeats leave Ghana at the bottom of Group C after the opening two rounds of matches.According to a deep and trusted source, Queiroz apologised to the players after the defeat by The Gambia and took full responsibility for the team’s results.He subsequently communicated his decision to step down to the GFA.Queiroz is expected to leave the Black Stars along with his backroom staff, including his assistant coach, nutritionist, conditioning coach, goalkeeping coach, video analyst and kit manager.His departure brings an end to a seven-match spell in charge of Ghana, during which he recorded one win, two draws and four defeats.The GFA is now expected to appoint a new head coach before the Black Stars reconvene in November for their back-to-back AFCON qualifying matches against Somalia.Ghana will be seeking to revive their qualification campaign after making a poor start to their bid to reach the 2027 tournament.
