Rapper Jay-Z returned to the headline stage on Saturday with a performance at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia, marking his first headlining show in more than five years.
During the 90-minute set, the hip-hop icon performed more than 30 songs and debuted a lengthy freestyle that appeared to address several figures within the music industry.
The freestyle, delivered without instrumental backing, included lyrics widely interpreted as targeting fellow rapper Drake. Jay-Z appeared to challenge claims made in Drake’s recent music while also referencing issues surrounding publishing rights and record contracts.
He also seemed to respond to comments previously made by Ye about his family, defending his children in a series of pointed bars. Despite the apparent criticism, Jay-Z still performed several songs from their collaborative album, Watch the Throne, during the show.
Another section of the freestyle was interpreted by fans as a reference to Nicki Minaj. The performance comes weeks after Jay-Z suggested in an interview that rap feuds may no longer be beneficial to hip-hop culture, while acknowledging his own history of engaging in lyrical battles.
