Ghanaian musician ShowBezzy has reacted to the country’s newly passed anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, which was approved by Parliament on Friday and criminalises the promotion of LGBTQ activities.
In a post on X, the artist suggested the law could have mixed outcomes. “The anti gay bill they passed will help a lot of Ghanaians in America,” he wrote, arguing that it could influence immigration-related asylum cases abroad.
He claimed that some individuals could use the legislation as part of legal defence in countries such as the United States, adding that it may allow people to “seek asylum” and avoid deportation if they face a risk of arrest upon return to Ghana.
ShowBezzy further noted that the law carries both “positive and negative effect,” saying it could benefit some Ghanaians living overseas.

The bill approved on Friday May 29, maintains the existing penalty of up to three years in prison for same-sex sexual acts. It also bans “funding, sponsorship or promotion” of LGBTQ acts, with prison terms ranging from three to five years. It further introduces a “duty to report” prohibited LGBTQ activities to police or other authorities, with violators facing up to three years behind bars.
