Management of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has presented the second tranche of assorted relief items to victims of the recent flood disaster in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region.
The items were mobilised from the public through GBC’s GTV Cares, a charity project set up to assist victims of the flood disaster.
About 30,000 residents were affected in the Central and South Tongu districts and the North Tongu District, which is the epicentre of the disaster. The items, worth thousands of Ghana Cedis, included bags of rice, cartons of cooking oil, bottled water, wax prints, clothes, and toiletries.
Apart from contributions from the public, Ghana Post also supported bags of rice and transportation of the items to the location for presentation.
Last month, GTV Cares facilitated a similar support to residents displaced by the floods at safe havens in Aveyime, Mepe, Agbetikpo and Battor. The beneficiary communities of the second tranche are located in the Vome, Torgodo and Homekpekpo electoral areas of the North Tongu District.
They include villages such as Afalekpo, Badzi, Atigonu, Kledeke, and Atigonu. Some of these communities were completely wiped out by the floodwaters. The Assembly Member for Vome Electoral Area, Gabriel Wetsi, said floods ravaged many homes and farmlands, a development that will have long-term consequences for the livelihoods of the victims.
During the presentation of the items at Morkplikpo, where some of the displaced persons have sought refuge, the GTV Cares Coordinator, Mr. Samuel Kotei Nikoi, said the project will continue to visit the affected communities with additional support as and when enough items are mobilised.
He entreated the committee responsible for disbursement of the items to ensure that they were evenly and fairly distributed to the intended beneficiaries.
The Manklalo of Battor, Togbe Borbordzi, who received the items, thanked GBC and Ghanaians for their immense support. He also appealed to GBC to use its platforms to inform government on the need to construct decent accommodation for victims who have lost their homes to the floods.
Many victims at the Morkplikpo evacuation camp could not hide their joy when GBC came with the truckload of items.
